Leveraging barley landrace diversity for adaptation in the High Atlas Mountains
I have initiated on-farm trials of 11 barley landraces (local varieties) in the 2025-26 winter season to evaluate landrace performance and farmer preferences in three sites in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. My research will provide insight into traits of barley landraces from southern Morocco; this could facilitate the leveraging of this diversity in adaptation strategies. By conducting participatory trials, I seek to incorporate farmer perspectives into sustainable development recommendations for High Atlas cereal systems. I intend to conduct a second year of trials in 2026-27; because every production year is unique with regards to climate, a second year will increase the applicability of results.
