Finding the Best Tree Species for Cooling Cities: Revealing the Role of Tree Traits in Boulder’s Urban Forest
This project will investigate the role of tree species in the heat reduction benefits provided by the urban forest of Boulder, Colorado. Using air temperature sensors, I will quantify the cooling effects of individual urban trees to identify which species provide the greatest cooling on average. Then I will measure the traits of each species, such as canopy structure and wood density, to identify which traits of species might be producing the highest cooling benefits. This trait-based approach can help us select ideal species planting palettes for cooling cities.
