Mayan Ethnobotany and Linguistic Phylogeny of Psidium Guajava
Guava (Psidium guajava) is a native plant with many uses across the Maya area. This research explores the ethnobotany and linguistic nomenclature of guava throughout time to understand how language and environmental knowledge interrelate. Integrating literature reviews, ethnobotanical interviews, linguistic analyses, and video recording, this research documents guava’s medicinal, nutritional, and cultural significance for local and global biocultural conservation and benefit.
The Anne S. Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany
To protect, preserve, and expand knowledge about the medicinal use of plants, thus preventing the disappearance of plants with therapeutic potential. Providing this research opportunity for botanists can, in turn, assist medical science to develop therapies that improve the quality of life of patients and develop life-saving medicines.
