Uncovering Cryptic Transgenerational Effects of Neonicotinoids in a Widespread Butterfly Pollinator
Neonicotinoids are a stressor on many pollinators, including at sublethal concentrations. Negative sublethal effects can persist over generations, leading to larger consequences for populations over time. However, our understanding of sublethal effects is limited, and we need more research to understand how exposure can influence reproductive success and population dynamics, especially in non-bee pollinators like butterflies. I will explore the transgenerational effects of sublethal neonicotinoid exposure on the cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) by answering 1) how does sublethal neonicotinoid exposure impact maternal reproductive investment and 2) how do females exposed to sublethal neonicotinoids pass (or not pass) effects onto offspring?
The Garden Club of America Board of Associates Centennial Pollinator Fellowship
To provide funding to study the causes of pollinator decline, in particular bees, bats, butterflies, and moths, which could lead to potential solutions for their conservation and sustainability.
