Lethal and Sublethal Effects of Three Co-occurring Pesticides on Monarch Butterflies (danaus Plexippus)
Pesticides are used globally with little understanding how they affect non-target species, including the famous Monarch butterfly. The precipitous decline of the Monarch butterfly has been associated with increased pesticide use in modeling studies, but with mixed support in laboratory studies. I will investigate both the lethal and sublethal effects of a combination of field-relevant pesticides to understand how pesticides affect Monarch butterfly performance. I will feed an untested combination of pesticides to Monarch larvae and use general measures of pesticide stress, including reproductive output and oxidative stress, to understand overlooked sublethal effects that may be causing Monarch butterfly declines.
The Garden Club of America Board of Associates Centennial Pollinator Fellowship
To provide funding to study the causes of pollinator decline, in particular bees, bats, butterflies, and moths, which could lead to potential solutions for their conservation and sustainability.
