2026 The Garden Club of America Montine M. Freeman Scholarship in Native Plant Studies
Propagation and Landscape Management of Native Ornamentals
I am examining seed germination and storage of Florida endangered woodland poppymallow (Callirhoe papaver) and southern beeblossom (Oenothera simulans), as well as the potential to reliably propagate these species from stem cuttings. I am also assessing maintenance guidelines for 12 native species in urban landscapes by evaluating plant responses to different intensities of pruning. I monitor plant growth, visual quality, and floral abundance at monthly intervals. The overall research goal is to confidently recommend native species for homeowners’ landscapes and identify management practices that maintain strong aesthetic appeal with minimal inputs.
