2014 The Garden Club of America Summer Scholarship in Field Botany
Carly Jean Prior is a junior at Boise State University. She will be doing an independent research program guided by her faculty mentor on the invasive grass medusa head (Taeniatherum caput-medusae), which is outcompeting native grasses in the western U.S. and altering fire regimes, making fire more frequent and more intense. This plant is self-pollinating; new populations can be established by a single seed. Carly will have an opportunity to do botanical research in the field, having previously only been in the lab. She hopes to increase understanding of the invasion process and to continue her studies and earn a Ph.D. in Botany.
