2020 The Corliss Knapp Engle Scholarship in Horticulture
Advanced Study in Gardening Using Ecological Approaches
Elena Peabody is a student in the School of Professional Horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden. This summer she will work with staff at the Nolen Glasshouses of NYBG, assessing their Integrated Pest Management program to advise how they might use biological controls (e.g. beneficial insects) as part of their routine pest control. She will develop a custom manual with a calendar of pre-emptive actions, thresholds for plant pest tolerance, and a cost-benefit analysis compared to conventional pesticides. Her goal is to reduce dependence on pesticides by making beneficial organisms a complementary part of the glasshouse ecosystem.
