2014 The Garden Club of America Award in Coastal Wetlands Studies
Eliza McFarland, a candidate for a Master’s in Environmental Science and Technology, University of Maryland, is examining ecosystem services of 15 restored and natural seasonally flooded wetlands on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware. She will quantify and qualify denitrifying microbial communities (bacteria, archaea [one-celled organisms] and fungi) which are strong indicators of wetland function and essential in processing excess Nitrogen-based nutrients such as ammonium (NH4) and nitrate (NO3) in wetlands. She is proposing a complete survey of denitrifying microbial characteristics (biomass, composition and activity) in restored and natural depressional wetlands.
