Environmental Vs. Biological Influences on Baldcypress Microbial Symbionts
Microbial symbionts are important to wetland ecosystems, and can help important species like baldcypress withstand stresses associated with land use change and sea level rise. This project examines how biotic and abiotic factors influence symbionts in and around baldcypress roots in Louisiana swamps. We have sampled eight sites across Southern Louisiana, with varying levels of hydrologic alteration. For environmental (abiotic) factors, we will consider water level, salinity, and distance, and for biotic factors, we will consider root morphology and host tree relatedness.
