Understanding the Floral Development Mechanisms of Saffron.
Despite the strong influence of floral architecture on harvest efficiency, the spatial and temporal expression patterns that govern C. sativus flower structure and stigma development remain poorly understood. This project aims to define the transcriptional architecture of saffron flower development by mapping ABCE-class transcription factor expression with RNA in situ hybridization and examining how those patterns relate to stigma development and crocin/picrocrocin synthesis. In explaining the floral architecture of saffron, this research hopes to introduce efficiency in saffron production that benefits saffron growers and clears the way for saffron usage in mental health treatment.

To protect, preserve, and expand knowledge about the medicinal use of plants, thus preventing the disappearance of plants with therapeutic potential. Providing this research opportunity for botanists can, in turn, assist medical science to develop therapies that improve the quality of life of patients and develop life-saving medicines.
