2026 The Frances M. Peacock Scholarship for Native Bird Habitat
Avian community response to non-motorized trail construction in Maine forests.
Participation in trail-based outdoor recreation is growing in the United States but can have negative ecological consequences, including potential effects on bird habitat. While the ecological impacts of existing trails are well studied, effects of new trail construction on bird habitat remain unknown. We will use acoustic recording units to quantify effects of trail construction on forest bird community composition and occupancy through two breeding seasons. Results will guide development of new trails in forested regions which minimize impacts on bird habitat.

To provide financial aid to study areas in the United States that provide seasonal habitat for threatened or endangered native birds and to tend useful information for land-management decisions.
