Multispectral Imaging of Spring and Autumn Phenology in Northern Red Oaks
This research examines the timing of spring budburst and autumn senescence in northern red oaks to identify maladaptive traits, such as premature budburst or delayed senescence, in a new environment. Using multispectral imagery from small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (sUAS), combined with visual and chemical field data, the study refines remote sensing techniques for phenological assessments. Conducted in a common garden at the Ford Center in Alberta, Michigan, this work informs assisted migration strategies for northern red oaks while advancing remote sensing applications in forestry and environmental science.
The Joan K. Hunt and Rachel M. Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany
To promote the importance of botany to horticulture by encouraging young students to study field botany in the U.S., and to offer an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the field beyond the regular course of study.
