A Non-timber Agroforestry Conservation Strategy for Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants

This research explores whether forest farming, growing medicinal plants within existing tree-based agricultural systems, can provide a sustainable farm-based supply of Pacific Northwest medicinal plants while reducing pressure on wild populations. Field trials across six sites spanning different elevations, climates, and landscapes will measure plant survival, growth, and medicinal compound production in Oregon grape and arnica in relation to soil moisture, nutrients, pH, and temperature. A review of additional native species and interviews with experienced forest farmers will place these findings within the broader context of multi-story agroforestry and practical farm management. By identifying cultivation strategies suited to Pacific Northwest farms, this project supports environmentally responsible sourcing, strengthens soil and ecosystem health, and creates new specialty crop opportunities for regional producers.
