Do Cultivated Forms of Native Plants Provide the Same Resources and Attractiveness to Pollinators as Native Plants?
Jen Hayes is a master’s student in horticulture and entomology at Oregon State University. As a member of Dr. Gail Langellotto’s Garden Ecology Lab, Hayes is studying pollinator preference for native plant species and cultivated varieties of native plants (“nativars”). She is researching eight plant species that are native to the Pacific Northwest, are suitable for use in home gardens, and have one to two nativar counterparts available in the retail market. She will survey flower phenology, floral traits, and pollinator visitation to understand which, if any, traits impact pollinator preference for native plants.
