2025 The Loy McCandless Marks Scholarship (an International Scholarship in Tropical Horticulture or Landscape Architecture)
Supporting Local Livelihoods and Nutrition in the Peruvian Andes: the Role of Potato and Quinoa Varietal Mixtures
This project aims to document farmer knowledge and utilization of potato and quinoa varietal mixtures in the Andes, focusing on their role in food systems and livelihoods. While these mixtures have long been part of Andean agriculture, understanding their contribution to dietary diversity and climate resilience is increasingly necessary as monocropping practices dominate. This research will explore local practices, barriers to adoption, and economic and nutritional perceptions of varietal mixtures through interviews, focus groups, and photovoice. The findings will guide the creation of culturally relevant resources to support the International Potato Center's efforts to promote varietal mixtures in Andean communities.
