2026 The Joan K. Hunt and Rachel M. Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany
Mapping the plant communities of Norvin Green State Forest, NJ - Integrating geomatics and field surveys to enhance plant conservation in eastern North America
I plan to conduct an inventory of the newly proposed Wyanokie Natural Area within Norvin Green State Forest, NJ by utilizing geomatics in conjunction with field surveys to characterize and map out the plant communities present, in addition to surveying rare plant populations and their immediate habitats in more detail. The results of these surveys will inform a management plan for the Natural Area. In the process, I aim to iteratively refine the geomatics techniques I use to enhance future similar survey work, contributing to the broader efforts of plant conservation in the region.

To promote the importance of botany to horticulture by encouraging young students to study field botany in the U.S., and to offer an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the field beyond the regular course of study.
