Campus Ecology: Comparative Analysis of Tree Ecosystem Services on College Campuses in Washington, D.C.
With this project, Hale will analyze and compare the ecosystem services provided by trees on college and university campuses in Washington, D.C. This will include biodiversity surveys, computational mapping, online ecosystem service calculations, and a comparative analysis of these metrics between different campuses. Additionally, the project will utilize D.C.’s diverse array of institutions (HBCUs, MSIs, public, private, etc.) to observe both ecological and social trends. Because college and university campuses can serve as primary green spaces for urban residents, Hale aims to further contextualize these campuses as opportunities for urban forestry and conservation.

To advance the field of urban forestry by encouraging students to study the planning, management, horticulture and ecology of urban forests, and the effect of healthy urban forests on people and the environment.
