Summer Environmental StudyLauren Brill
2016 The Garden Club of America Awards for Summer Environmental Studies
Lauren Brill is a sophomore majoring in Environmental Engineering at Tufts University. She will study metal hyper-accumulating plants at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum. Plants are considered hyper-accumulators if they survive high metal concentrations in the soil and uptake high amounts of metal ions into their tissue. Her research will examine connections between the presence of metals such as nickel and aluminum in the soil and defense responses in plant leaf tissue. She will also assist with closely related ongoing research at the Arnold Arboretum that explores the evolutionary mechanisms behind the development of metal hyper-accumulation.
