2026 The Mary T. Carothers Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship
Investigating the Impacts of Beech Leaf Disease on Photosynthetic Reactions Responsible for Plant Health
Beech leaf disease, caused by a foliar nematode, was first documented in Lake County, Ohio, in 2012 and now threatens forests across the Northeastern United States. Although a growing body of literature has examined the effects of beech leaf disease on the dark reactions of photosynthesis, far less attention has been given to the light reactions. In this study, we compare light-reaction activity among diseased beech leaves, asymptomatic leaves from diseased trees, leaves from trees in an unaffected region, and leaves from naturally resistant trees, with the goal of identifying where within the photosynthetic pathway dysfunction arises.
