2020 The Katharine M. Grosscup Scholarships in Horticulture
Megan Herrmann is a master’s student in environmental science at Cleveland State University. Her research compares the plant and soil microbial communities of vacant lots in urban, suburban, and exurban sites in order to understand the impact of urbanization on ecosystem functioning. The presence and abundance of species will be studied, along with functional traits, to assess the impact of different levels of urbanization on the vacant lot land-use type. Plant and soil community traits can be used to determine functional diversity and the ability of communities to provide ecosystem services. This research will advance the understanding of urbanization’s impact on ecosystem processes.
