2015 The Garden Club of America Fellowship in Tropical Botany
Melissa A. Johnson is a Ph.D. Candidate at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (in affiliation with Claremont Graduate University). Her work will focus on resolving phylogenetic or evolutionary relationships within the Pacific lineage of Cyrtandra which is a genus of flowering plants containing 600 species. Melissa's fieldwork will be centered in Fiji and Samoa, which represent an important biogeographic interface zone for the group between Southeast-Asia and the islands of the Pacific. Her work will assist in conservation efforts for the future by clearing up distinction between species.
