2014 The Frances M. Peacock Scholarship for Native Bird Habitat
Nicholas A. Mason is a Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. His project is titled: "Analyzing genomic signatures of phenotypic and demographic change in Horned Larks (Eremophila alpestris) caused by a century of desert farming in the Imperial Valley of Southern California." Because the Horned Lark's habitat in Souther California underwent a dramatic transformation from desert scrub into agricultural land, the species had to change, migrate, or go extinct.
