Historic Bryophyte Communities Serve as Indicators of Environmental Change in Great Lakes Region Fens
This project will resurvey the bryophyte species and percent cover of 20+-year-old historic fen plots last surveyed by the New York Natural Heritage Program. Bryophytes serve as indicators of environmental change due to their high site specificity, which provides insight into these fens' health and stability. Data collected will be analyzed using principal component analysis ordinations to visualize any species presence or abundance shifts. Knowledge gained from this research will help to inform future management and restoration efforts within these rare biodiverse wetland systems.
The Joan K. Hunt and Rachel M. Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany
