2016 The Garden Club of America Awards for Summer Environmental Studies
Rachel Reeb is an undergraduate majoring in biology and environmental science at the College of William and Mary. Her research will focus on common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and understanding the differences in the mycorrhizal colonization and host responsiveness of common milkweed across the state of Virginia. She will work in a greenhouse and in the field to collect a broad sampling of data to understand how mycorrhizal colonization differs across this geographic area, as well as, the significance of native origin in the mycorrhizal colonization and plant responsiveness of common milkweed. She emphasizes the importance of common milkweed for the conservation and survival of the monarch butterfly.
