Influence of Woody Encroachment on Grassland Butterfly Populations, Including Threatened Dakota Skipper Populations
We will evaluate the influence of woody plant encroachment at both site and landscape levels in the northern Great Plains, specifically the mixed-grass prairies of central North Dakota. We will quantify its’ influence on butterflies, including the federally threatened Dakota skipper (Hesperia dacotae), through changes in abundance, species richness, diversity, and community composition across different encroachment levels. We will quantify changes in floral resources and the larger plant community through changes in abundance, species richness, diversity, community composition, cover classes, and percent native plants across different encroachment levels.
