Turning Back to the River: Spatial Dynamics and Waterway Relations Along the Assabet
This project aims to understand how the impact of legacy dams manifest themselves in the built environment in the Assabet River corridor in Massachusetts. Over 14,000 dams have fundamentally altered New England’s waterways and have had a profound impact on the way towns spatially relate to their rivers. Using local case studies in tandem with others from the wider New England region, selected for their innovation around dams, I intend to draw connections between historical and contemporary conditions along varied waterfront sites. This will provide decision makers with insights that can help them foster development in their communities that bring greater ecological health and social connectivity to the riverbank.
