Christmas in Historic Downtown Perrysburg is a joyful scene which has been featured in the opening credits of several Hallmark movies. Since 1965, Country Garden Club, working with the City of Perrysburg, has decorated the historic downtown for Christmas bringing the magic of the holidays to residents and merchants.
The project starts in the summer with budgeting, purchasing, and planning, and by Thanksgiving, Country Garden Club and Perrysburg “elves” have transformed downtown Perrysburg into a nostalgic, holiday streetscape.
Installation starts in mid-November with members assembling the hanging baskets and garlands at a local nursery. The next day, the club’s November meeting is held at a Perrysburg city garage. That meeting is devoted to stringing lights, and putting bows on balled live evergreens annually purchased by the club. The hanging baskets and garlands are completed with ribbons and red and gold balls. The city’s employees then take the finished products and install all of the decorations.
The holiday season kicks off the first Saturday in December with strolling carolers, a Santa writing station, live reindeer, and a parade through the beautifully decorated historic downtown.
After the holidays, the live, balled evergreens are planted around the city and the cut pines, used in the hanging baskets, are mulched.
