Carrie T. Watson Garden Club Mentors Young Gardeners

The Carrie T. Watson Garden Club (CTWGC) in Erie, PA, is sponsoring Rosebuds, a new youth garden organization. The local children’s group was founded for the purpose of promoting a love of nature from a young age for Erie area youth. It is the hope that garden practices that have been handed down over generations will continue for many more. A committee of CTWGC club members mentor the young gardeners during monthly meetings on various topics such as horticulture, conservation, or the environment.

This past year, twenty girls and boys, ages six to sixteen, from the Erie community joined for the first Rosebuds gathering. A former CTWGC president taught the children an engaging lesson about raising Monarch butterflies during which each child got to name, tag, and release a butterfly.

Subsequent Rosebud meetings were hosted by Carrie T. Watson veteran members. One local artist and historian spoke about garden history and design and treated the Rosebuds to a private tour of her studio and beautiful gardens at her home. Another gathering hosted the children in a holiday arrangement clinic after which the floral displays were donated to a local senior care facility.

Future Rosebud adventures are scheduled for a local farm to learn about permaculture techniques and multiple field trips to various arboretums and botanical gardens.
