June 20, 2019

Look back on this influential piece of environmental writing

2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the publication of A Sand County Almanac. Its author, Aldo Leopold, was a keynote speaker at the 1947 Annual Meeting of The Garden Club of America in Minneapolis and his speech, “The Ecological Conscience,” was the foundation of many of the ideas which later appeared in this book.

Mr. Leopold was one of the first graduates of the Yale School of Forestry and later a beloved professor at the University of Wisconsin.

“In this 70th anniversary year,” said GCA Library Committee chairman Julie Peet, “we are pleased to draw attention to this great work of Aldo Leopold — one of the finest examples of environmental writing.”
