The Garden Club of America Summer Scholarship in Field Botany


Award:  $3000
Deadline: February 1 preceding the summer of study

Purpose:  To support student’s field studies and offer an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience beyond the regular course of study.

History: In the late 1990s, to help offset this trend of declining or consolidated botany programs at colleges and universities the GCA's Scholarship Committee added a proposal for a summer scholarship in field botany to its list of possible new offerings. Beginning in 2000, Mrs. Henry Streeter, an ardent horticulturist and member of the North Shore Garden Club of Massachusetts, generously offered to fund this opportunity. 

Provisions:  Provides $3000 annually to one student for out-door summer study in the field.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduate and master’s degree students. Research must be conducted in the Western Hemisphere. Eligibility is open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in a U.S. - based institution.

Selection:  Members of the GCA Scholarship Committee and professionals knowledgeable in field botany will select awardees.

Scholarship Opportunities Abound

The Garden Club of America offers 28 merit-based scholarships and fellowships in 12 areas related to conservation, ecology, horticulture, and pollinator research. In 2018, more than $308,400 was awarded to 65 scholars.

In its inaugural year, the Montine M. Freeman Scholarship in Native Plant Studies was awarded to Angela Merriken and Dr. Uma Venkatesh.
